ON THE CONSOLIDATION OF GOVERNMENT
Dear B. S.
March 9, 1989
Thank you for your letter....
I am concerned by your stand for the consolidation of the city
and county governments, and am writing in the hope that I might
be able to cause you to re-think your position.
God scattered the people
at the Tower of Babel for this reason: places where large
numbers of people live have the distinct nature of being able to
become centers, not only of culture, but of evil. Micah
declared, "...What is the transgression of Jacob? is it not
Samaria? and what are the high places of Judah? are they not
Jerusalem" (Micah 1:5; compare with Amos 3:9).
The reason that cities
accumulate evil is not owing simply to the congestion of
population, but to the congestion of moral evil. God condemned
the cities of Israel because they became exponents of a spirit
of self-dependence that caused them to dwell securely, and to
cultivate the spirit of rebellion. Consequently, they multiplied
their sins. So, God said, "I will cut off the cities of the
land, and throw down all thy strong holds" (Micah 5:11).
When Nimrod "began to be a
mighty one in the earth" and "a mighty hunter before the Lord,"
we are told "the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech,
and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar" (Genesis
10:8,9,10). Why do men always set their eyes on bigness? because
they walk by sight, and not by faith.
It is on account of the increased
corruption found in cities that God promises that in the future,
He will condemn all cities, and they shall cease to exist. Lot's
fascination with Sodom destroyed his family (See: Micah 2:10;
3:8-12). But, the day will come when every man shall sit in
rural simplicity under his own vine, and eat from his own fig
tree (Micah 4:4).
Consider the pride and arrogance
manifested in the recent history of our city, and how it has
issued in a waterfall of corruption and intrigue. Certainly, the
consolidation of the city and county governments will result in
a consolidation of evil as well. Although our world is breaking
down national barriers, and promoting one-worldism, or
"globalism," this is not the way of the Lord: He divided the
nations, and scattered them. Yet, He did not leave them without
witness, but allowed them to seek the Lord, "if haply they might
feel after him" (Acts 17:27). Thank you for your time.
ON MILITARY SERVICE
Dear R. S.
November 18, 1987
...The reason some
Christians shy away from military life is because in our day,
military life has become totally humanistic. Consider Oliver
Cromwell, who allowed no one in his army who swore: only
Psalm-singing men, who feared the Lord were allowed. This is
without a doubt the reason that he never lost a battle. I once
heard a Sergeant say that he wanted no one in his company unless
he swore, and drank, and ran after women.
The Covenanters of Scotland
would kneel on the battlefield when they were about to do
battle, and they would pray, "Lord, take the ripe, and spare the
green."
In our own history, Archbishop
Leonidas Polk, General in the Confederate Army, wrote a tract
entitled, "Balm for the Wounded," and he had a godly testimony
while attending West Point Academy.
And, Stonewall Jackson was so
earnest a Christian, that the first log chapels were erected in
his army. He would not even mail a letter on Sunday. He, too,
was known to pray all night before doing battle. We do not have
men like this today.
