The Pleasing of Men

A Family Session

Marriage Ring-XIII

"Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority over them. BUT IT SHALL NOT BE SO AMONG YOU.... " --Matthew 20:l5b, 16a

THE PLEASING OF MEN

Text: ...if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ." --Galatians l:10b

How can it be thought that God will suffer to go unpunished such a preacher as he has given a talent of gifts to, if he shall use these merely to gain a stipend or applause to himself, not respecting the glory of his Master?

The applause of this world is worth nothing.... When it is got, what have you? They think much of you, you think much of yourself, and in the meantime, God thinks nothing of you. ‘That which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.’ (Luke 16:15)

Seeking your own glory, is a dreadful and abominable thing. In the first place, you put yourself in God’s room. His glory should be that which you should aim at.

It is the most gross dissembling with God that can be. You pretend to preach Christ to a people, but seeking your own glory, you preach yourself and not Him. You pretend to be commending Christ and the ways of God to souls, and yet in the meantime you commend yourself.

Will Christ sit with such a mocking of Him? ...Will not Christ be avenged on self-preaching ministers?

It is base treachery and cruelty to the souls of hearers, when a man seeks to please their fancy than to gain their souls, to get people to approve him more than to get them to approve themselves to God. ...It is dear-bought applause that is won by the blood of souls.... Let

them call you what they will, but you seek God’s glory and their good.

"A FAMILY SESSION"

Our Schedule:

I. At present, we conduct three weekly services in the chapel of the Bon Air Residential Hotel. These include a Sunday Morning service, a Sunday Evening service, as well as a Wednesday Evening Bible Study.

II. In addition, to these services, we preach twice a month at the regular morning Chapel services held for the Hotel guests.

III. We teach the Word of God to children in schools. I teach in excess of 1200 students each week, while my dear wife instructs another 100O children. This alone involves at least 35 hours each week.

IV. On Monday evenings, between 7:00 and 9:00, I teach 10 black pastors New Testament and Reading, At present we are using the California Reading Lab for this latter course.

V. On Tuesday evenings, between 7:00 and 9:00, I teach a Greek course at the Augusta Bible Institute as well as a course in Church History

VI. The Angelus involves 5 hours one afternoon every two weeks to print. Then with my dear wife and Miss Betty Howard, a teen-ager, it requires an additional 5 more hours to sort, address, and prepare for mailing. We type nearly 400 address labels each month.

Yet, for our labor, we receive less than $100 a week. This includes, of course my wife’s teaching as well. This is the reason; no doubt, we do not own a stove, nor so much as a lawnmower. And we try desperately to pay a Modest $131 rent each month.

Nor is this a11: it is evident a printing press is badly needed. For three years, Pastor Gene Baxley, Of Berean Baptist Church in Hephzibah, Georgia, has graciously come to our rescue by printing the Angelus on his Multilith 1000 model. It has been an extreme hardship for him with his many duties. But he has always been gracious to us.

HELP US. Do you have a printing press you are not using? Or will you help us secure one? Or better yet, Do you know a Printer who would willingly assist us in our printing needs?

When Jonathan Edwards was voted out of his church at Northampton, Massachusetts because of his stand for Purity of Doctrine and Purity of Conduct, (more than 200 voted against him compared with 20 who voted for him), he wrote to Ebenezer Erskine in Scotland:

"I am as it were cast upon the wild ocean of the world and I know not what will become of me and of my numerous and chargeable family."

We ask ONLY that our brethren pray for us --Oh, that you might do this much for us!

Part XIII -- THE MARRIAGE RING

O wife, you know the hour when the "good man of the house" will return: do not let him find you at such a time as when he is weary with exertion, and faint with discouragement, wandering at a distance. Yours is the foot that should hasten to meet him. Nor, let him find a wilderness, where he ought to see order, neither that which disgusts when he might hope to find neatness--that which delights and attracts.

A man’s home is the circle of his pleasures: let the companionship of an affectionate and intelligent wife, and of well-disciplined, well-educated children greet the one whom God will hold accountable for the right-ordering and right-governing of his household.
