"WHY WILL YE DIE? ...

Why will ye perish? Why will ye not have compassion on your own souls? Can your hearts endure, or can your hands be strong, In the day of wrath that is approaching? ... ‘Look unto Me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God and there is none else.’ (Isaiah 45:22) ‘Come unto Me, and I will ease you of all sins, sorrows, fears, burdens, and give rest unto your souls. Come, I entreat you; lay aside all procrastinations, all delays; put me off no more; eternity lies at the door, do not so hate Me as that you will rather perish than accept of deliverance by Me.’

"These and the like things doth the Lord Christ continually declare, proclaim, plead and urge upon the souls of sinners.... He doth it in the preaching of the Word, as if He were present with you, stood amongst you, and spake personally to every one of you.... He hath appointed the ministers of the Gospel to appear before you, and to deal with you in His stead, avowing as His own the invitations which are given you in His name ’Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.’"            (II Corinthians 5:20)

ANNA JUDSON

Text: "L0, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is His reward."

--Psalm 127:3

In the sweet Providence of God, my wife gave birth to a little daughter on Tuesday, December 7. After some toying with names, Catherine and I in honor of the devoted wife of Adoniram Judson, a Baptist missionary to Burma, and of the "prophetess" of whom Luke the Evangelist writes (2:36-38). In his commentary on the New Testament, Adam Clarke gives very plausible reasonings that her age may have easily been 103 years: yet she "departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day." Services were held in the temple on a daily basis at the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. What a commentary on today’s faithlessness!

Anna Judson joins her two brothers, Timothy Dwight—age 5 years, in honor of the noted Congregationalist minister; and John Wesley --age 3 years not because we are in sympathy with his Arminianism, but in honor of the man of whom Charles Spurgeon said, "Peace to his ashes, death to his errors, life to all the truth he preached, and may the blessing of God make any one of us, but a tenth as earnest as he was, and a tenth as useful!"

"As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate." –Psalm 127:4,

NOTE: Adam Clarke points out the Hebrew word for "son", being "ben", and that of "daughter", "bath", as well as "house", "beith" – all come from the same root word "bana" meaning "to build" because not a house alone, but also a son and daughter we must build.
