The God Who Is

Chapter 4

THE ATTRIBUTES OF GOD:

An Overview

The Song of Moses is found in Exodus chapter 15. It was written at the time of the destruction of Pharaoh's army in the Red Sea. People in our generation have become so effeminate that they cannot understand how Moses and the children of Israel could sing at the destruction of the enemies of the Lord. With the loss of the knowledge of God, we have lost the knowledge of what constitutes godliness.

In verse 11, Moses waxes eloquent as he says, "Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?" In verses 1-22 of this chapter there is a tremendous commentary on the attributes of God.

In Isaiah chapter 6, beginning in verse 1, the prophet writes, "In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

"And one cried unto another, and said, `Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.' And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, `Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.'

"Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: and he laid it upon my mouth, and said, `Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.'"

Again, in Revelation chapter 1, beginning in verse 12, John testified, "And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; and in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

"His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; and his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, `Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.'"
